Astronomy - StellariumScope

stellscope48StellariumScope is a FREE add-on that enables you to control your telescope with Stellarium . Stellarium is an excellent, free, open-source planetarium program .

The original StellariumScope program was designed and implemented by Scott of ByteArts and is still available at http://www.bytearts.com/stellarium/ If you have difficulties with the releases available on Welsh Dragon Computing  site, you may want to consider using the original version.

The versions of StellariumScope distributed on this site, although based upon the original StellariumScope, have been independently developed primarily for the EQMOD project. In many cases, it will work satisfactorily with other mounts but I cannot give any guarantee that it will and for those other mounts where it does not  work, I am unable to do very much to solve the issues.  Feel free to send me detailed information that may help to solve the problems but otherwise you will have to resort to other solutions. For individuals demanding I fix StellariumScope to work with their mount, I would point out that the utility is free... with all that "free" implies. I'm providing an application that was developed for my own installation with the hope that others might find it useful.

Please note that a number of mounts work directly with Stellarium and do not need StellariumScope at all.  Check the following link:

http://www.stellarium.org/wiki/index.php/Telescope_Compatibility

Initial tests with Stellarium 0.13.0 seems to indicate that the current version of StellariumScope still works.  You will receive a comment about the version when you install StellariumScope but proceed with the install anyway. For previous installations, you should delete the .ini files (see: Options menu item)  and start with a  fresh [Update Stellarium Configuration] button.

A note to Norton users:

Sometimes an installation will not complete because of Norton being overly protective.  I do my best to be sure that StellariumScope is "clean" but you should always scan the download to be sure.  However, once you have scanned the download you may still have a problem.

MInimal Installation Instructions

Comment: It has been suggested that you do a manual installation to interface StellariumScope to Stellarium. I strongly recommend that you do not do this. Use the built in [Update Stellarium Configuration] button to complete all the settings automatically instead. Of course there may be reasons to "tweak" settings manually... but do try the automatic route first... it really does work and typically sets ALL the required options that make StellariumScope work properly.

If you use the manual method from within Stellarium, you will find difficulty in getting the proper connections to work.  Part of the issues is that Stellarium resets the port numbers to match the telescope number (the key number you use on the keyboard).  The latest version of StellariumScope (2011.05.29) checks for the mismatch and recommends that you adjust them to be consistent.  This should help with situations where you are tempted to access the manual setup using Stellarium.

You will also find that when you access the setup using Stellarium, Stellarium will set the "Telescope controlled by" option to 'Nothing'.  You will have to reset it to "External software or remote computer".

Full details are available in the documentation but this is the best way to get StellariumScope working reliably.

(Just stay away from any changes using Stellarium's "Configuration | Telescope Control")

  1. If you have just installed Stellarium, you should run it at least once and exit.
  2. If you have been running Stellarium and StellariumScope, you should backup your config.ini and telescopes.json files typically stored in appdata\Stellarium.  Remember that appdata is usually a hidden folder and you will have to enable the option to show hidden folders and files.
  3. If you have just upgraded to a new version of Stellarium, I would recommend deleting or renaming the old Stellarium config.ini file and then run Stellarium once and exit.  This will create a fresh config.ini file.
  4. Install StellariumScope.
  5. Run StellariumScope (you will probably receive a short diagnostic message).
  6. You can click the "Diagnostics" menu item for more details but you can typically ignore first time error diagnostics.
  7. Confirm the default "Stellarium Configuration" options... they can be easily changed later.
  8. Click the [Update Stellarium Configuration]. Watch for any suggested changes.
  9. Connect mount.
  10. Start Stellarium.
Backing up or deleting previous files

Please be sure to backup or rename your current config.ini and telescopes.json files

If this is an update of Stellarium, just rename the config.ini file.  That will take care of item 3 above.

  • config.ini can usually be found in %appdata%\Stellarium
  • telescopes.json can usually be found in %appdata%\Stellarium\modules\TelescopeControl (it may not exist)
  • remember the appdata folder may be hidden

Delete your current StellariumScope.ini file before running the new version (not usually necessary, but a good idea if you're having difficulties).

  • StellariumScope.ini can usually be found in %appdata%\Stellarium

Please be sure to provide feedback about the performance, features or bugs... use the "Contact Us" menu item to the left. Even just a 'quickie' note to say that you're using it and that it suits your needs would be appreciated. Keep in mind that I do not guarantee that StellariumScope will work for all mounts and, although I will try, I cannot promise to fix problems for mounts other that EQMOD.

The older versions of StellariumScope will not work with Stellarium 0.12.x.  The good news is that StellariumScope may no longer be necessary as there are (apparently) built in drivers for more scopes.

Release 2013-03-15 (beta)

Stellarium 0.12.0 has been released. A nice addition is the possibility of using keys other than Ctrl-1, Ctrl-2 etc. to control the slew. For instance, you could use the F9 key without the necessity of holding down the Ctrl key while you press the "1" key. You can set this yourself using Stellarium's

Configuration | Navigation | Edit Keyboard Shortcuts

option. I would recommend using "alternative Shortcut" option with the Right arrow key.  A later release of StellariumScope will integrate this feature Unfortunately, Stellarium doesn't want to remember the edited keys... hopefully this will be resolved in a later Stellarium release..

Added features:
  • opportunity to delete the 2 INI files that are associated with Stellarium and StellariumScope to help with a 'clean' startup after previous installed versions
  • a better solution to finding the correct command line for various operating systems and versions of Stellarium

(Thanks Todd)

Release 2010-04-11 (Beta)

Download link: alt Setup_StellariumScope_20100411.exe]

Remember: It only supports 0.10.4

This release attempts to solve some issues involving connections to the mount via StellariumScope.

Configurable host option added

The following information applies to older versions of StellariumSCope (no longer supported).

You should also be aware that enabling the Stellarium Telescope Control plugin control option may create issues between Stellarium and Stellariumscope. You can manually create 3 "telescopes" using Stellarium that correspond to the settings that you have used with Stellariumscope. However, it's usually much easier to simply leave the plugin "off" and let Stellariumscope control the configuration.

Known issue: There is a problem with using sync and JNOW option in all  releases (below) with the JNOW feature.  Use the J2000 option or use the EQMOD game pad sync button (if using EQMOD) as a work around.

Release 2010-01-23

alt Setup_StellariumScope_20100123 [1.9M]

This release attempts to solve some issues for those users with different resolution settings on their computers.

It allows you to manually change the keys used to control the mount (you have to edit the ini file).

It enables the telescope connect at all times.

It add some information about running StellariumScope on a computer different from the one running Stellarium.

Release 2009-08-24

Download link: alt StellariumScope 20090824 [1.9M]

Release 2009-08-20

alt StellariumScope 20090820 [1.9M]

This release is a  beta version that allows you to convert the J2000 coordinates to JNOW.  It replaces the previous time-limited JNOW release (this release is not time limited). It replaces the auto-start option for Stellarium with an explicit button.

Release 2009-06-27

alt StellariumScope 20090627 [1.9M]

This release fixes the problem of the poll time not being remembered between sessions.

It also adds the option that allows the use of the desktop colors theme.  This feature is helpful if you are trying reduce the "brightness" of your computer screen and have selected a theme with  very little  bright colours.

I use Windows XP pro, so my settings would be:

Display properties | Appearance | Windows and buttons | Windows Classic Style
Display properties | Appearance | Color Scheme | High Contrast Black

This gives a very dark screen. It also helps to go into the screen settings and reduce the brightness and contrast settings.

Original Version

An older version of StellariumScope is still available here: Download StellariumScope V2008.6.6 [750KB]

This older version works quite well with the latest version of Stellarium with the exception that you will probably have to use the manual method to setup Stellarium. See the documentation included in the download.

all other versions below are not time limited but are no longer maintained.
